He brought Subway to Antigua, Guatemala!!!!
They've been working on it since, oh, March and kept taunting us with huge signs that said "Subway Coming Soon". For almost six months!!! Every so often, we'd wander up there to check on it, and always walk off in a disappointed huff when we saw it was still not open. Until yesterday. Yesterday, Irene and I went for a walk in the middle of the afternoon to go get some cash from the ATM ( a regular outing for anyone that lives here!) and a snack of fresh fruit from one of the fruit carts near the park. On the way there I said to Irene that we should detour a block and check on Subway. When we got there, the "Coming Soon" signs were gone, doors still shut, but the windows were open. I crossed the street for a closer inspection and, peeking in the window, I saw a beautiful Subway counter, displays of (American!) chips, and many workers obviously doing last-minute preparations. I asked one of the women inside when the restaurant would be opening and was thrilled to hear "in a half an hour"!!! Even better, the manager said "It's ok. Come on in!". And we did. We were the VERY FIRST people to ever eat at the Subway in Antigua!!!!! It may sound ridiculous to you, and if it does, I ask you to put yourself in my shoes. I've been living here for over one year. I can't tell you the last time I had a good sandwich with all the fixins and so it was the best meal I've had in months. The bread was fresh and warm, the vegetable crisp... And the manager gave Irene and I each a free cookie for being their first customers! It was SO FUN and such a gift. I don't believe for a second that it was an accident. My wonderful, heavenly Father was cheering me up and He did it perfectly!

Sharon, It does not sound ridiculous!! I lived in Romania for 4 months while I was in college, and finding something of home was always a red-letter day!!!
We used to ration boxes of Kraft Mac & Cheese... that was like GOLD!!!
I totally get it. God is good :-)

S, I, & I:
Y'all have been chatting this Subway thing up for months. I was so excited to hear that y'all were the first customers! I think you desereved to be the first, since you've been scoping out the place since February.
Great job snagging cookies. Did you ask them to place your quetzales on the wall in a plaque. You can even sign your name. Maybe make a photo and sign it. Sort of a local celebrity. You are a local celebrity. We would love to come back (all of us someday, together :) ) and see that picture sometime in the far future.
We are happy for you.
